Black Trans Nation (BTN) is a non-profit organization that was established by TS Candii in 2020. The organization's primary objective is to advocate, educate, and motivate the public to take collective action in support of the transgender community, with a particular focus on Black and POC individuals and sex workers. BTN aims to put an end to discrimination against the transgender community by influencing policymakers to enact policies that eliminate stigmatization, decriminalize, and decarcerate the community. The organization implements a range of outreach initiatives to promote awareness and provide access to key resources, such as housing, health, employment, legal immigration, and other critical social services. BTN recognizes the unique challenges and barriers faced by the Black and POC transgender community and is dedicated to empowering and supporting individuals to live their lives authentically and with dignity. The organization is committed to building a more inclusive and equitable society that embraces and celebrates diversity in all its forms. Through its advocacy, education, and support initiatives, BTN strives to create a world where everyone is free to be who they are and can live without fear of discrimination or persecution.
TS Candii is a daughter of the south, hailing from Nashville, Tennessee. In her early 20’s she moved to New York in search of a supportive community and more robust set of resources for TNGC community members. Unfortunately she faced the status quo - housing and employment discrimination, spending three years in the NYC shelter system where she suffered anti-transgender and sex worker discrimination, physical, verbal, and mental abuse. This pattern of behavior was evident with her interactions with staff and residents in the shelters and social services personnel (NYCHRA), the very organizations tasked with helping her to improve her situation.
