Empowering Black Trans Community

Black Trans Nation works towards influencing global policies with the aim of improving the lives of Black trans individuals who engage in sexual labor by choice, circumstance, or under coercion, as well as those who are profiled as such and the communities affected by the criminalization of sex work and sexual exchange. The organization is guided by three fundamental principles: to advocate for the decriminalization, decarceration, and destigmatization of these individuals and communities.

BTN challenges by following 10 principles of disability justice.

Intersectionality: Ableism, white supremacy, capitalism, and heteropatriarchy have rendered most of the world "invalid." -Audre Lorde.

II. LEADERSHIP OF THOSE MOST IMPACTED. “We are led by those who most know these systems.” – Aurora Levins Morales

III. ANTI-CAPITALIST POLITIC. In an economy that sees land and humans as components of profit, we are anti-capitalist by the nature of having non-conforming body/minds.

Disability justice fosters cross-movement organizing and redefines ableism in social justice movements.

V. RECOGNIZING WHOLENESS. People have inherent worth outside of commodity relations and capitalist notions of productivity. Each person is full of history and life experience.

VI. SUSTAINABILITY. We pace ourselves, individually and collectively, to be sustained long term. Our embodied experiences guide us toward ongoing justice and liberation.

Solidarity for all disabilities: We value every community member's contribution & reject isolation as a barrier to collective liberation.

VIII. INTERDEPENDENCE. We meet each other’s needs as we build toward liberation, knowing that state solutions inevitably extend into further control over lives.

IX. COLLECTIVE ACCESS. As brown, black and queer-bodied disabled people we bring flexibility and creative nuance that go beyond able-bodied/minded normativity, to be in community with each other.

Collective liberation requires no one left behind, body or mind. Revolution is achievable together. #DisabilityJustice

BTN connects black, trans & gender non-conforming communities

Black Trans Nation strives to influence worldwide policies that enhance the quality of life for individuals who are Black, transgender, and involved in sexual labor by choice, coercion or circumstance, as well as those who are identified as such and communities affected by the criminalization of sex work and sexual exchange. The organization is guided by three fundamental principles: to eliminate criminalization, reduce incarceration rates, and eradicate stigma.

TS Candii

TS Candii is a daughter of the south, hailing from Atlanta, Georgia. In her early 20’s she moved to New York in search of a supportive community and more robust set of resources for TNGC community members. Unfortunately she faced the status quo - housing and employment discrimination, spending three years in the NYC shelter system where she suffered anti-transgender and sex worker discrimination, physical, verbal, and mental abuse. This pattern of behavior was evident with her interactions with staff and residents in the shelters and social services personnel (NYCHRA), the very organizations tasked with helping her to improve her situation.

BTN advocates for and provides services to

Becoming Candii, is a book about my journey through a traumatic psychophysical transformation that made me who I am today.

I am proud to be a transgender woman. This is my true story. What I needed to be left behind. What I needed to embrace. I followed my bliss, and my bliss found me. ~ TS Candii
